Health Protection

RATIONALE

The module introduces the basic principles of health protection, infection control and the management of environmental hazards from a global perspective. It aims to develop student knowledge and understanding of the control of communicable diseases, chemical incidents and other environmental hazards, and the concept of emergency planning. The focus emphasizes prevention and is designed to enable public health practitioners to understand and explore their role and contribution to the protection of the health of populations.

AIMS

1. Introduce students to the principles and practice of health protection within the context of public health.
2. Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles of the control of infectious diseases and environmental hazards.
3. Enable students to develop a comprehensive understanding of organisational responses to disease outbreaks, chemical incidents and environmental hazards.
4. To enable students to contribute to the consistent, efficient and effective delivery of health protection services in professional public health practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the control of infectious disease, the roles of individuals and agencies, and the impact of local settings.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and a critical understanding of organisational responses to chemical incidents and environmental hazards.
3. Appraise current research, theories and concepts to provide public health advice for control of health hazards.
4. Critically evaluate the contribution of the consistent, efficient and effective delivery of health protection services to the health of populations.
